British Glasgow wants to become a sister city of Mykolaiv

The British city of Glasgow will consider a twinning proposal with Mykolaiv this week.

This was reported by the BBC with reference to the local council, NikVesti writes.

It is noted that council members will also be asked to sign a memorandum of understanding with Mykolaiv and invite representatives of the Ukrainian city to a ceremony in Glasgow.

The BBC notes that since 1986, Glasgow has been twinned with Russia's Rostov-on-Don, located on the Don River near the Black Sea. However, with the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the British city broke off relations with Rostov-on-Don.

Mykolaiv was chosen as a potential twin due to its shared shipbuilding history with Glasgow.

After that, the local council sent a letter to the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, in which Glasgow offers «friendship and solidarity to Mykolaiv as sister cities.»

«We trust that the people of Glasgow will be ready to provide practical support and assistance as well as moral support to the people of Mykolaiv as you work to meet their needs and rebuild your city amidst the constant threat following the attack and following the loss and injury of so many of your citizens to the Russian aggression,» says the letter.

In response, Oleksandr Sienkevych noted that twinning with this British city would be a great honor.

«On behalf of the Mykolaiv City Council and all residents of the hero city of Mykolaiv, I have the honor to pay tribute to all the friendly people of Glasgow, your city council and you personally. It is a great honor for me and for our city to expand our international ties at such a difficult time for Ukraine, to share international experience in order to rebuild Mykolaiv and end the war as soon as possible,» the mayor's letter was quoted by BBC.

It will be recalled that previously the capital of the British crown possession of Jersey, St. Helier became a sister city of Mykolaiv.
