A workshop of Tavrian painting, a unique painting technique that has deep roots in the south of Ukraine, has been operating in Mykolaiv for a year now. During this time, hundreds of city residents — educators, artists, and educators — have learnt the basics of painting here.
Ruslana Sikalenko, manager of the NGO «Adult Education Centre «South», told NikVesti.
The Tavrian painting workshop began its life almost a year ago, but now it is a place where cultural and artistic life is in full swing, says Ruslana Sikalenko. "Over the year, they managed to teach 11 groups.
«Our goal is to popularise Tavrian painting, to study, to increase the number of carriers of the painting. We have already trained and graduated 11 groups, including diverse groups, i.e. representatives of different professions, as well as 5 groups of preschool teachers and methodologists and one group for methodologists and masters of vocational education,» says Ruslana Sikalenko, manager.
The next important goal, she says, is to include Tavrian painting in the National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
The training is conducted by artist and expert on Tavrian painting Liubov Paraniuk. She says: The painting was born on the Kinburn Peninsula, and its uniqueness lies in its deep symbolism, shape and colours.
«I have always wondered why no one knows that our Mykolaiv region also has a unique painting. The fact is that Tavrian painting is primarily a wall painting. It was found in Kinburn. It is a blue and blue colour scheme because it is associated with the material that would have been available to the craftswomen who were engaged in painting. The mural has a lot of symbolism, and this is important because all the symbols and signs are connected to the sea. The way it was born on Kinburn, the way the sea and the estuary are combined in one place, so there are many waves, many lighthouses, a stylised image, many boats, fish,» says Liubov Paraniuk.
Today, the workshop is not just an educational space, but a real Tavrian painting House, as Liubov lovingly calls it. Here they create souvenirs, develop visual materials and hold masterclasses for everyone.
«In order for the painting to live on among people, it was necessary to create souvenirs that would be interesting. This is not just a workshop, it is Tavrian painting house. This is my big dream that has come true,» she adds.
In November 2023, Polina Pidhorodynska, a graduate of Mykola Arkas Lyceum in Mykolaiv, closed the Doctorat honoris causa award ceremony in Paris and presented a plate with Tavrian painting to Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
