Residents of Mykolaiv described how they survived today’s shelling

The aftermath of the attack on Mykolaiv on 28 July 2026, photo by NikVestiResidents of Mykolaiv, whose homes were damaged during the daytime Russian attack, described how they survived the shelling. Some managed to take shelter in the hallway, whilst others saw the blast wave rip windows and doors from their homes.
The residents shared their stories with a correspondent from NikVesti.
Mariia Shportko explained that, whilst the air-raid siren was sounding, she and her husband were repairing a tap at her mother-in-law’s house. That was where the family took shelter during the explosion.
«We were in the corridor when the missile struck. So we were more or less safe. But our house was closer to the site of the explosion, so the damage there is much more serious,» she said.
According to her, her husband sustained minor shrapnel wounds, whilst she, her child and her mother-in-law were unharmed.
«My child and I are unharmed. We have no injuries, not even a scratch. My husband was near the entrance to the house and sustained some minor shrapnel wounds. He’d come here on holiday — and then this happened. Our younger son and my mother-in-law were at the nursery; they’re both fine.
We’re still in shock; we’re absolutely shaken up. But the main thing is that we’re alive,» says Mariia.
The family’s house has suffered significant damage.
«The roof, windows and doors have been blown off. The ceiling has already collapsed; we don’t know yet what’s happened to the roof. There are cracks all over the house. It might not be possible to live there anymore,» she says.
Maria adds that if the family had been in the kitchen or the bathroom, the consequences could have been much worse.
«If we’d been in the kitchen or the bathroom, we would definitely have been injured,» she said.
Another resident, Antonina Shevchenko, said that at the moment of the explosion she had only just opened the door when a window flew towards her.
«It was horrific. I’d only just opened the door a crack when I heard a window flying towards me. It was lucky that I’d moved into the bathroom and stood behind the wall. It didn’t shatter, it just flew out. And from the other side, another window came flying — all the glass was shattered,» the woman said.
As a reminder, this afternoon, 28 July, Russian forces carried out a combined attack on Mykolaiv — the city was struck by Shahed-type attack drones, guided aerial bombs (GABs) and «Banderol» UAVs.
