Mykolaiv City Council has explained that the solid line near the McDrive is part of the restoration of the old traffic layout

Back in the spring, a solid line was painted along Mariupolska Street in Mykolaiv, from Tsentralnyi Avenue to Pavlo Skoropadskyi Street, to reduce traffic jams near the McDrive. However, drivers still frequently ignore the road markings, drive into the oncoming lane and cause traffic jams.

It should be noted that residents of Mykolaiv have repeatedly pointed out that drivers frequently disregard the solid line and queue up for McDrive from the oncoming lane. As a result, traffic jams regularly occur in this area, and other road users are forced to manoeuvre to get round the cars waiting to pull in.

In response to an information request from NikVesti, Mykolaiv City Council explained that the application of a solid line does not constitute a change to the traffic management scheme. According to the city council, this involves the restoration of road markings that were provided for in the current traffic management scheme.

The document states that the solid line from Tsentralnyi Avenue to Pavlo Skoropadskyi Street was painted “as part of the restoration of road markings previously used at this location in accordance with the existing traffic management scheme, and not as part of any changes to it”.

«The need to restore these markings arose from the urgent requirement to remove obstacles to traffic along the city’s main roads, in the form of a significant queue of vehicles on Tsentralnyi Avenue in the direction of travel from Mala Morska Street, and a queue along the odd-numbered side of Mariupolska Street (namely in the oncoming lane) from Tsentralnyi Avenue to the turn onto Skoropadskyi Street in the direction of the drive-through at the McDonald’s’ fast-food outlet. As per the requirements of paragraph 15.3 «Stopping and Parking» of the Ukrainian Highway Code, where road marking 1.1 is present, driving into the oncoming lane and parking on the left-hand side of the road in the direction of travel are prohibited,» the document states.

In addition, the city council reported that the Municipal Specialised Installation and Maintenance Enterprise (KSME) is currently revising the current traffic management scheme for this section. It will then need to be approved by the Road Safety Department of the Patrol Police Directorate in the Mykolaiv region.

Vitalii Dushko, spokesperson for the Mykolaiv Region Patrol Police, told NikVesti that the number of reports regarding the situation near McDonald’s has recently decreased significantly.

«There are now far fewer calls regarding disturbances near McDonald’s. Perhaps the commotion has died down. Even yesterday, I saw that there were only a few cars in the queue, and they were queuing without causing any significant obstruction to traffic,» said Vitalii Dushko.

At the same time, he noted that the worst traffic jams usually occur after an air-raid alert has ended, when the restaurant reopens and a queue of cars quickly builds up outside.

«When the situation was at its worst, we sent additional patrols there. Now that it’s possible, patrol officers are also monitoring this section. First and foremost, we’re carrying out preventative work with drivers, but if there are grounds for it, offenders are held administratively liable,» said Vitalii Dushko.

It should be noted that the McDonald’s in Mykolaiv officially opened on 27 March. Local residents had been queuing since early morning.

They were in no hurry to open the doors to the public, as representatives of the authorities were on a tour of the premises. Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, the head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration Vitalii Kim, MPs and officials were spotted there. They were shown how the kitchen operates and the food preparation processes. By 11.30 am, the doors were opened to the public and people began rushing inside.

Closure of McDonald’s in Mykolaiv

As a reminder, the McDonald’s fast-food restaurant in Mykolaiv closed at the start of the full-scale invasion.

In April 2023, the mayor of Mykolaiv had already announced that a McDonald’s was due to open in the city in the near future. Also, at the end of 2023, McDonald’s staff in Mykolaiv began refurbishing the restaurant premises and the surrounding area.

It later emerged that McDonald’s could not open in Mykolaiv due to a lack of safe drinking water. However, the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, promised to discuss the matter with the company’s management.

In the summer of 2024, the Land Commission of Mykolaiv City Council voted to extend the lease term for the land plots held by «McDonald’s Ukraine Ltd».
