As of the end of August, almost 18,000 tons of watermelons were harvested in the Kherson region.

Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration, announced this on the telethon Yedyni Novyny.

«153,000 hectares of Kherson lands were sown — three times more than last year. Grains, legumes, technical crops are mainly grown. Currently, the harvest is still in progress. Of course, unfortunately, many fields were burned under the shelling. But our agricultural producers have already harvested more than 190,000 grains and 18,000 tons of watermelons,» Oleksandr Prokudin said.

At the same time, 1.3 thousand tons of melons, 23 thousand tons of rapeseed, 11 thousand tons of potatoes, and 6 thousand tons of vegetables were harvested in the region, he added.

We will remind you that the yield of vegetables in the Mykolayiv Region remains at the level of last year.

How does the agricultural sector work in the Mykolaiv region?

At the beginning of March, twelve regions in Ukraine have already started sowing spring cereals — wheat, barley, peas and oats. Among them is the Mykolaiv region.

This year, in the 2024 sowing campaign, the agrarians of the Mykolaiv region used the lands that were flooded as a result of the Russian troops undermining the Kakhovka HPP. The head of the Mykolaiv Oblast noted that the farmers of the Mykolayiv region began to grow more technical crops due to blocked ports and problems with logistics.

It should be noted that the agricultural producers of the Mykolaiv region, who suffered losses after flooding due to an explosion at the Kakhovskaya HPP, received compensation from the state in the amount of 1.5 billion hryvnias.

In addition, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) selected 29 agricultural producers from the Voznesenskyi district of the Mykolayiv region, who will receive modular grain storage facilities for storing their products.

In 2023, the production of agricultural products in the Mykolaiv region, compared to 2022, increased by 24%.

During 2023, the Mykolaiv region exported 2.3 million tons of grain and leguminous crops.

In general, the losses of Mykolaiv Oblast farmers due to the full-scale war amounted to 5.5 billion dollars.
