The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Taras Kremin, answering the question of whether those who are called Russian-speaking can be considered Ukrainians, stated that there is no such term as «Russian-speaking».

He said this in an interview with Radio Liberty.

According to him, Russian-speaking is a marker introduced by the ideology of the Russian Federation.

 — We are citizens of Ukraine. And this marker (Russian speaking — note), which was introduced by Russian ideology, is also determined by the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. If it is necessary to create something better, then I, as an authorized person, of course, stand on that side. We should have a state program to promote the mastery of the Ukrainian language as the state language, said the language ombudsman.

In addition, Taras Kremin emphasized that the Ukrainian language is mandatory for the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and is dominant in all spheres of public life, adding that he is ready to help those who switch to Ukrainian.

— And, regardless of whether they are national communities or foreigners, everyone must speak the Ukrainian language on the territory of the Ukrainian state. Because it is the language of the educational process, the educational trajectory, of course, the future of life, and it is a conscious choice of the language of an indomitable nation. Let's not forget that the struggle is taking place at the front and for what language we will communicate. And who, if not a military person, can understand all this perfectly, - emphasized Taras Kremin.

It is worth reminding that a scandal recently broke out in society due to the statement of former People's Deputy Iryna Farion, who said that she cannot call Russian-speaking Ukrainian military personnel, in particular, fighters of the Azov brigade, Ukrainians. This caused outrage among Ukrainian servicemen.

After that, the Security Service of Ukraine started criminal proceedings and ordered a number of examinations regarding her statements and publications.

In response to this statement, the language ombudsman replied that in 10 months of 2023, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language did not receive a single complaint regarding the violation of the Law on the State Language in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Although Taras Kremin said in the spring that he does not think that public figure and scientist Iryna Farion, known for her radical statements against Russian-speaking in Ukraine, is speculating on these issues.

Later it became known that Iryna Farion was dismissed from her position as a professor at the Lviv Polytechnic.
