To adapt Mykolaiv region to climate change, 171 measures worth €155 million are needed. The regional military administration expects to find donor funds for this.

This was announced during a briefing on 27 January by Oleksandra Yefymenko, Head of the Ecology Department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, according to NikVesti.

As it is known, APENA 3 project experts have developed a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Mykolaiv Oblast.

«This project envisages 171 measures with an estimated cost of €155 million, which is designed for seven years. This is a long period. We will need to seek grant funding to implement all the measures envisaged by this Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. We will have to do this for seven years,» said Oleksandra Efymenko.

"The research data shows that Mykolaiv region is one of the regions most affected by climate change - droughts and an increase in the maximum temperature.

The experts have now drawn up a plan of 171 activities and expenditures for seven years. In particular, it is proposed to

  • integrate sectoral measures into a single system;
  • develop an early warning system for weather events;
  • create a monitoring system;
  • create special departments and structures;
  • support scientific institutions.

Climate strategy of Mykolaiv region

Mykolaiv region is one of the pilot regions for which APENA 3 project experts are developing climate strategies and adaptation plans. The other two regions are Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

However, Mykolaiv region, like the rest of Ukraine's south, feels the effects of climate change more acutely. They are reflected in the highest annual average temperature growth and extreme weather events in Ukraine, as well as in the impact on the agricultural sector. The region has also suffered from Russian aggression.

Back in May 2023, the project experts presented interim results of an assessment of the vulnerability of economic sectors to climate change using Mykolaiv region as an example. At the time, it was said that changes in average annual temperatures in the region exceeded global figures. It turned out that this trend has been accelerating over the past 30 years, with more frequent and intense thunderstorms, showers and squalls. At the same time, they added, Russian aggression has further increased the risk of fires in the steppe and other parts of the region.
