Twice as many people died in January as were born in Mykolaiv

In January, 171 babies were born in Mykolaiv, while 381 residents died.

This was reported during an open staff meeting on Monday, 2 February, by the head of the Mykolaiv Health Department, Iryna Shamrai, and the director of the municipal institution «Mykolaiv Funeral Service», Serhii Vaseleha, according to NikVesti.

According to Iryna Shamrai, 83 boys and 88 girls were born in January.

In five years, the birth rate in the Mykolaiv region has almost halved. While 7,558 children were born in 2020, in 2025 there were 3,179.

According to the Health Department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, 7,558 children were born in 2020, 4,401 of them in Mykolaiv. In 2021, 6,928 babies were born, 4,041 of them in Mykolaiv.

At the beginning of the full-scale war in 2022, 4,175 children were born in the Mykolaiv region, 1,670 of them in Mykolaiv. In 2023 and 2024, the number of newborns increased slightly, but the region did not return to its pre-war level.

  • 2020 — 7,558 children, including 4,401 in Mykolaiv
