Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which the Russian authorities call a «special military operation» or «SMO», is in fact another stage of the Russian-Ukrainian war that Russia unleashed in 2014. The open full-scale military attack began on February 24, 2022. As early as 5 a.m., Russian artillery and aircraft began shelling the Kulbaky airfield and the port of Ochakiv. Since the first days of March, Russians have been trying to surround Mykolaiv and even attempt to enter the city. Facing resistance, Russian troops retreated toward the Kherson region. During the war, a large number of public buildings were destroyed in Mykolaiv, including schools, kindergartens, universities, and hospitals. Residential buildings were destroyed, and civilians were killed and injured. On the morning of March 29, a cruise missile destroyed the building of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration on Admiralska Street. This tragedy claimed the lives of 37 people, mostly employees of the administration and Mykolaiv Regional Council.
