The average level of communal services and the poor condition of bomb shelters: residents of Mykolaiv assessed the quality of life in the city in a survey

Residents of Mykolaiv rated the average quality of services provided in the city. In particular, the state of medicine, protective shelters, police work, hospitals and educational institutions.

The survey was conducted by the Sociological group «Rating» on the order of the International Republican Institute (IRI) in April-May 2024, writes NikVesti.

The citizens rated the quality of communal services an average of 3 points out of 5 possible.

The worst indicator indicated in the survey related to water supply (34%).

The situation with gas and electricity supply at the time of the survey shows that residents are satisfied with the quality of services — most of the population rated it at a high level.

Other services were rated as follows:

• garbage collection: 11% — excellent, 44% — good, 43% — average, 6% — bad, 4% — terrible;

• street lighting: 8% — excellent, 59% — good, 20% — average, 6% — bad, 2% — terrible;

• heating: 8% — excellent, 50% — good, 20% — average, 5% — bad, 4% — terrible;

• transport infrastructure: 8% — excellent, 45% — good, 28% — average, 9% — bad, 2% — terrible.

In particular, the townspeople are dissatisfied with the quality of the arrangement of the bomb shelters — 26% said that the shelters are in a terrible condition.

The residents of Mykolaiv rated the state of ecology and access for people with disabilities no better:

• state of ecology: 2% — excellent, 18% — good, 36% — average, 22% — bad, 17% — terrible;

• access for people with disabilities: 1% — excellent, 15% — good, 24% — average, 24% — bad, 14% — terrible;

• medical institutions: 3% — excellent, 27% — good, 38% — average, 15% — bad, 7% — terrible;

• social protection: 2% — excellent, 17% — good, 34% — average, 18% — bad, 11% — terrible;

• police activity: 5% — excellent, 27% — good, 30% — average, 11% — bad, 7% — terrible;

• Universities: 2% — excellent, 22% — good, 23% — average, 16% — bad, 9% — terrible;

• schools: 3% — excellent, 20% — good, 25% — average, 19% — bad, 10% — terrible;

• kindergartens: 3% — excellent, 23% — good, 20% — average, 12% — bad, 6% — terrible.

Survey of residents of Mykolaiv in 2023

Last year, a survey by the Sociological Group «Rating» commissioned by the International Republican Institute (IRI) showed that 92% of Mykolaiv residents are proud to be residents of this city. Most of them answered that they do not plan to leave the city in the event of a military escalation.

The survey also showed that almost half of the residents of Mykolaiv (47%) assess the condition of bomb shelters in the city as terrible or bad.

Last year, Mykolaiv residents also responded that they approve of the activities of Vitaliy Kim, the head of the RMA. The level of positive attitude towards the administration is the highest among the cities of Ukraine. Attitudes toward Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych were almost equally divided among those interviewed.

About 56% of Mykolaiv residents also answered that their family's economic situation has worsened over the past 12 months. At the same time, 13%, on the contrary, note an improvement.

An analytical survey in 2024 showed that 18% of Mykolaiv residents do not know whether they will leave the city in the event of another Russian offensive to the south, and 43% of Mykolaiv residents believe that things in the city are going in the wrong direction.

Also, the approval rating of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration decreased from 73% in 2023 to 48% in 2024. And 36% of locals approve of the activities of the Mykolaiv mayor.
