In Mykolaiv, individual heating units (IHPs) are planned to be equipped with batteries, inverters, and generators to ensure uninterrupted operation during power outages.
This was discussed during a staff meeting on Monday, 2 March, according to NikVesti.
Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych noted that after the end of the heating season, the city will begin preparations for the next season — with an analysis of the state of the networks, planning repairs and testing.
The mayor focused separately on the work of the IHP. He proposed considering the possibility of installing bypasses at individual heating points due to unstable operation during power outages. This refers to a bypass pipe line that allows the heat transfer fluid to bypass the main equipment without turning off the heating in the entire building.
However, the director of Mykolaivoblteploenergo, Mykola Lohvinov, opposed the installation of bypasses. According to him, this would disrupt the hydraulic regime and could cause the boiler room equipment, namely the frequency converters, to malfunction. He said that one such device costs about 60,000 euros and takes up to eight weeks to deliver.
He added that such damage to the equipment could leave the entire district without heating.
Instead, the regional heating company plans to equip the heat distribution stations with batteries and inverters, and is also working with international donors to provide generators for the facilities.
«Bypasses are not an option — this is an emergency situation. To avoid a repeat of this winter, we are installing inverters and batteries and plan to install them at all IHP facilities. Bypasses can cause such damage to the system that we could burn down the entire district boiler room,» said Mykola Lohvinov.
As a result, the mayor instructed Mykolaivoblteploenergo and Mykolaiv TPP to prepare a list of all individual heat distribution points and a plan for their operation in the next heating season.
It should be noted that the first individual heating points (IHPs) for Mykolaiv, for which Denmark provided €7.2 million, will begin to be installed in 2026.
As is known, the project to install IHPs is being carried out by the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO). It has now announced tenders to find contractors to carry out this work.
What is an IHP?
An individual heating point (IHP) is an automated device that is installed in a building and controls the supply of heat. It can:
- regulate the temperature depending on the weather (external temperature schedule),
- provide more even heat,
- save energy,
- provide hot water supply with a heat exchanger,
- have a built-in heat meter.
How does an individual heat point work?
An individual heat distribution unit receives heat from the city network, but it «decides» how much heat to supply to the building. It is equipped with temperature sensors, pressure regulators and pumps. This ensures that heat is supplied evenly and residents do not suffer from overheating or cold.
Why does an individual heat distribution unit help save money?
An individual heat distribution unit allows you to consume only as much heat as you really need. If it gets warmer outside, the system will automatically reduce the supply. This helps to avoid overspending and reduces bills by 15-30% depending on the season.
