Illustrative photo NikVestiDeputies of the Mykolaiv Regional Council have appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to postpone secondary school reform in frontline regions and preserve children's right to accessible comprehensive secondary education.
The relevant decision was adopted during a session of the regional council on Wednesday, 29 January, according to NikVesti.
The chairman of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, Anton Tabunschyk, said that the issue had been discussed at a meeting of the regional council's presidium on 28 January. The discussion focused on secondary school reform and the creation of a network of academic lyceums.
«As a result of the discussions, it was decided to appeal to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to postpone the reform of secondary schools in the frontline regions and to agree to adjust the plan for the formation of a network of general secondary education institutions in the Mykolaiv region,» said Anton Tabunschyk.
The appeal was supported by 41 deputies of the regional council.
What does the senior school reform entail?
The senior school reform is part of the nationwide educational reform New Ukrainian School. It involves a transition to 12 years of schooling and the division of schools into three levels: primary, basic and senior.
Senior school (grades 10–12) should operate in the format of academic or vocational lyceums. In academic lyceums, students will choose their field of study — humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, etc. — with in-depth study of specific subjects. At the same time, there are plans to consolidate such institutions, which may lead to the closure of senior classes in small communities and the need for daily transportation of students.
The launch of the senior school reform at the national level is planned for 2027. It will be the next stage in the development of the New Ukrainian School educational reform. From that time on, 9th grade graduates will be able to continue their education in academic lyceums, choosing specialised areas and subjects in line with their future profession.
The reform is to be implemented in stages:
- A pilot implementation will take place in 2025–2026. Over the course of two academic years, new educational standards, curricula and materials will be tested in selected institutions.
- The transition phase will last from 2027 to 2029. During this period, the senior school model will be gradually implemented throughout the country, with simultaneous refinement of approaches and content.
- The final phase of the reform is planned for 2029–2033, when the senior specialised education system should be fully operational in all regions of Ukraine.
We would like to remind you that Voznesensk Lyceum №8 is included in the list of 79 lyceums that will pilot the senior school reform from 1 September 2026.
We would also like to remind you that last year, four general secondary education institutions in the Mykolaiv region were included in the list of schools that participated in the Ministry of Education's experimental project to strengthen the safety of the educational environment.
