A social taxi service for people with disabilities is operating in 13 communities in the Mykolaiv region

Residents of the Mykolaiv region who use wheelchairs can make use of the social taxi service. Such transport services have been organised in 13 communities across the region.

This was announced during a briefing by Oksana Yelchiieva, Director of the Department of Social Protection of the Population at the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, according to NikVesti.

According to Oksana Yelchiieva, the Mykolaiv region is implementing the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment across six areas: physical, digital, informational, civic, social and educational accessibility.

«Around 60 flagship projects aimed at supporting people with disabilities are currently being implemented in the Mykolaiv region. Such projects are effective, as the number of people using these services is increasing,» said the director of the social protection department.

For example, a social taxi service operates in the region. Transport groups have been set up in 13 communities across the region to help people with disabilities travel to hospitals, social service centres, educational institutions or other locations.

According to the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration,

this social taxi service is free of charge. Transport services operate in the Mykolaiv, Pivdennoukrainsk, Nova Odesa, Domanivka, Veselynivka, Kobleve, Kazanka, Berezanka, Bashtanka, Snihurivka, Chornomorka, Novyi Buh and Mishkovo-Pohorilove communities.

In addition, people with disabilities can learn to drive themselves.

As a reminder, NikVesti reported that Mykolaiv has been home to the region’s only driving school teaching people with disabilities to drive for two years now. However, as recently as January 2026, it was impossible to sit the theory test at the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centre: the office for submitting documents and taking the exam was on the second floor, but there was no lift or barrier-free access.

At the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs service centre, we were told that it was impossible to make the space accessible because the building was over 50 years old. We subsequently sought comment from Mykolaiv’s mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych, who promised to meet with the head of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs service centre, Hennadii Pohorelov, to resolve the issue.
