Hospitals have 760 doses, pharmacies have none: what is the situation with rabies vaccines in Mykolaiv region?

As of 11 November, hospitals in the Mykolaiv region had 760 doses of rabies vaccine available for patients seeking treatment after being bitten by animals.

This data was provided by the Health Department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration at the request of NikVesti.

They assure us that in 2024-2025, there were no cases of shortages or interruptions in the supply of rabies vaccine.

According to the Mykolaiv Regional Health Department, the vaccine is available in the following locations:

At the same time, Inna Yatsenko, head of the immunoprophylaxis department at the regional Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, recently stated that the region does not have enough vaccine to fully provide preventive vaccinations to all who apply. According to her, the region has not received another shipment of vaccine, so it is impossible to fully cover the need.

Also, at a briefing on 20 November, Iryna Shamrai, Head of the Health Department of the Mykolaiv City Council, said that Mykolaiv region is at epidemic risk due to the rapid spread of rabies, and that the city's pharmacies currently lack the vaccine.

«Unfortunately, we can state that there are not enough vaccines available today. However, we have talked to the Mykolaiv Regional Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health. According to their applications to the state, we should receive a sufficient amount of rabies vaccine in December. I think we will be fully provided. Currently, rabies vaccine is not available in pharmacies in Mykolaiv», said Iryna Shamrai.

It was also reported that new cases of rabies among animals were recorded in Mykolaiv region. Doctors urge residents to be vigilant, avoid contact with stray animals and seek immediate medical attention in case of a bite.
