Ukraine has created a network of battery parks that can support the operation of the power system even during massive Russian shelling.

This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

It is noted that these are American energy complexes with a total capacity of 200 megawatts, located in classified locations across the country. Their energy is enough to provide electricity to about 600,000 homes for two hours.

According to the WSJ, the programme is worth about $140 million and is part of a large-scale modernisation of Ukraine's power grid. It aims to make the system more decentralised and resistant to missile and drone attacks.

Currently, six such stations are already operating in Kyiv and Dnipro region. They are automatically connected to the grid in the event of a shutdown of thermal power plants or other power sources.

Due to military risks, the exact locations of the batteries are not disclosed. To protect them, an air defence cover system has been organised.

Fluence, the American company that supplied the battery systems, said that each unit is modular, easily replaceable and has a state-of-the-art fire safety system.

«Everyone understood how important it was to do this now,» said Julian Nebreda, CEO of Fluence.

Such battery systems have become part of Ukraine's energy strategy, which combines nuclear, renewable and backup energy. Experts believe that such technologies will help Ukraine get through the winter without large-scale blackouts.

As a reminder, on 1 October, following an attack by Russian troops on a city substation in Slavutych, a complete blackout was recorded. This caused a blackout at the Chornobyl NPP that lasted more than three hours. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced the power outage at the time.

Later, power was restored to the Chornobyl NPP after Russian strikes.
