Water supply was cut off in three neighbourhoods of Mykolaiv due to an accident on the water pipeline.

In Mykolaiv, water supply was cut off in the Soliany, Pivnichnyi, and Ternivka neighbourhoods due to an accident on the water pipeline.

The problem was reported during an open staff meeting on 12 January, according to NikVesti.

Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych noted that in the morning he received several calls from residents of Soliany regarding the lack of water.

According to Vasyl Telpis, technical director of the Mykolaivvodokanal municipal enterprise, the water supply stopped at around 10 p.m. the previous day. Emergency crews spent the whole night inspecting the network, but found no obvious leaks.

«The crews are currently working to determine the cause. There are no obvious leaks. Most likely, the problem is in the culvert. We will determine the cause definitively and then decide on further actions,» explained Vasyl Telpis.

Later, Mykolaivvodokanal clarified that the culvert's service life had already expired, so this is not a simple repair. According to preliminary estimates, approximately 190 m of 350 mm diameter pipe at the bottom of the river needs to be replaced. The time frame for repairing the accident has not yet been determined.

The company asks residents to be understanding of the situation. Technical and drinking water will be delivered according to agreed schedules.

As a reminder, new water treatment facilities for centralised water supply in Mykolaiv are being built with funds saved during the construction of a new water pipeline. Treated water is promised to be launched in January, but the water treatment facilities will be fully operational in March 2026.

Initially, it was planned to take out an EIB loan for the construction of new water treatment facilities for Mykolaiv, with Denmark providing part of the funding as a grant. The project was expected to take several years to complete and was intended to help provide the city with water of European standard quality.

However, the head of the State Agency for Reconstruction, Serhii Sukhomlyn, later said that this idea had been abandoned. It was decided to build the new water treatment facilities using state funds — those that had been saved during the construction of a new water pipeline for the city.

However, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych supports the modernisation of new water treatment facilities with a loan from the European Investment Bank, but believes that the state should pay for it.
