Project works delayed: construction of new school in Zelenyi Hai to start next year

In the village of Zelenyi Hai in the Shevchenkivska community of Mykolaiv region, the design of the reconstruction of the local school is underway. The shelter, which withstood an air strike, will have to be replaced.

According to the head of the Shevchenkove community, Oleh Pylypenko, a project for a new school is currently being prepared. It was planned to be completed earlier, but the process was delayed. Construction should begin in 2026.

According to him, at first they wanted to adapt an old shelter that had withstood the shelling, but a survey showed that a new one needed to be built.

«In general, the design should have been completed by now, but there were certain reasons. The design will probably be completed in October and construction will begin in 2026. Initially, we planned to use the shelter that was in the old school, as it had withstood an air strike. But then we conducted a number of studies and decided to build a completely new shelter», said the community leader.

Funding is being provided by the Lithuanian Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Fund together with Taiwan.

The school will be built using a modular construction method, which will reduce construction waste, speed up installation and make the facility adaptable to the future needs of the community.

Oleh Pylypenko also emphasises that €2.7 million is the preliminary cost of the construction. The final amount will be known after the completion of the design and estimate documentation.

«At the moment, this is the amount, but we understand that it will be more when the design is complete and the total cost is clear. Then it will be possible to add funds to», says Oleh Pylypenko.

Subsequently, investigators began to collect evidence of war crimes committed by the Russian military on the territory of the school in the village of Zelenyi Hai. During the inspection, experts found and seized ammunition fragments and other evidence of war crimes.
