More than 260 planted plants have been stolen or destroyed in Mykolaiv since the beginning of the year

Since the beginning of the year, more than 260 cases of damage, theft or uprooting of green spaces have been recorded in Mykolaiv.

This was reported by Dmytro Chuchmai, director of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks», during a live broadcast on 15 July, NikVesti.

According to him, the utility company plants trees, bushes and flowers to improve the environmental situation and create a comfortable urban space. However, some green spaces are damaged almost immediately after planting.

«Since the beginning of the year, more than 260 cases of damage, uprooting and theft of green spaces have been recorded. Some locations have cameras that help us identify those responsible. Each time such incidents are recorded by filing a report with the police at», said the company's director.

Dmytro Chuchmai said that CCTV cameras have been installed at certain locations, which help identify the offenders. Each case is recorded and reported to the police.

«If citizens witness such actions, the first thing to do is to politely address the person and ask them to stop damaging the community's property. If there is no response, you should immediately contact the police at 102», says the head of the utility company.

It should be reminded that the problem of stealing plants in Mykolaiv's green areas has been around for a long time. In the summer of 2018, a man and a woman stole several rose bushes in the centre of Mykolaiv at night. The plants were planted by the owners of a clothing store at the intersection of Moskovska and Spaska streets.

In the autumn of 2019, a man and a woman dug up flowers from a flower bed in the city centre during a night walk, got into a taxi and took them away.

In 2021, trees were even chained at the main entrance to Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University to protect them from theft. Back in November 2019, an unknown person stole young trees at the main entrance to the university.

In the same year, unknown persons dug up three sakura saplings recently planted on Troitska Street in Mykolaiv.

Already in March 2025, in Mykolaiv, unknown persons stole about 45 lavender bushes in a park at the intersection of Kolodiazna and 3a Slobidska streets, which had recently been planted by students. After that, employees of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» expressed outrage over another theft of lavender bushes in the park at the intersection of Kolodiazna and 3rd Slobidska streets.

Also last year, in the green areas of Mykolaiv, the places of stolen plants were marked with signs that read: «There was a rose here, but it was stolen» and «There were crocuses here, but they were stolen». Such signs appeared in Mykolaiv's park «Lisky» and «Heart of the City» in the centre of Mykolaiv.
