The new Pope Leo XIV, who recently became the head of the Catholic Church, has declared his readiness to mediate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
According to DW, a meeting between the delegations of the two countries could take place in 3-4 weeks in the Vatican, provided that Kyiv and Moscow confirm their participation. Leo XIV has repeatedly emphasised the importance of a diplomatic solution to end the war.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that the Vatican is ready to provide a platform for the talks, although the Pope himself will not participate in them on a daily basis. The initiative was also supported by some world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
It should be recalled that Donald Trump, commenting on a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, for the first time publicly suggested the Vatican as a platform for negotiations to end the war.
Also, during a telephone conversation with European leaders, US President Donald Trump admitted that Vladimir Putin has no intention of stopping the war in Ukraine, as he believes that Russia is winning.
