Accelerating Ukraine's accession to the European Union could become the main guarantee of security after the war.

This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a speech at the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, reports «European Truth».

Von der Leyen stressed that this is not only Ukraine's aspiration, but also an important step towards establishing lasting peace in Europe. She noted that Ukraine's EU membership was a key topic of her meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome.

According to her, the outcome of the war will have an impact on the future of the entire European continent. She warned that an unfair peace deal would only intensify aggression, while a just peace could become the basis for a new security system in Europe.

Von der Leyen also named three key EU priorities on this path: «First, to support Ukraine's defence capabilities. Second, to complete the phase-out of Russian fossil fuels. And third, to speed up the process of Ukraine's accession to our Union».

As a reminder, US Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg has proposed the creation of a demilitarised zone between Ukraine and Russia as a potential step towards resolving the conflict.
