European officials are pushing for the US President Donald Trump's administration to commit to Ukraine's security, including through the participation of the US military in a possible peacekeeping mission.
According to Bloomberg, the allies support the position of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who believes that US participation in such a peacekeeping force is key to ensuring its credibility. Although Donald Trump is currently refraining from taking a clear position, analysts suggest that the US may agree to this initiative in the future.
At the moment, European countries are trying to understand and influence the new US administration's approach to this issue. However, Trump is also seeking to build a dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which adds to the uncertainty.
One European official has warned that if Europe is forced to send peacekeepers on its own, it could negatively affect NATO's unity and the credibility of the transatlantic partnership. Such a development could even jeopardise the future of the Alliance.
Diplomats also note that Trump's position on supporting Ukraine has begun to change. In private conversations, his team has demonstrated the US's willingness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
However, Trump may demand that Europe assume most of the obligations related to ensuring the implementation of any agreements, as he considers the war in Ukraine to be more of a European problem.
At the same time, the president's team has made it clear that the US does not plan to be directly involved in Ukraine's reconstruction. According to them, this issue should be resolved by the private sector, not public funds.
It should also be noted that Donald Trump recently said that his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy should not have allowed a full-scale war to take place, and said that he «is no angel».
In addition, Donald Trump called on Putin to make a deal to end the war in Ukraine, promising to increase sanctions and tariffs against Russia if he refuses. Donald Trump said that «does not want to harm Russia» because «loves the Russian people and has always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin».
