Over the past four years, the city authorities have failed to carry out maintenance work on the building of Mykolaiv Gymnasium №48.

This was reported by the executive committee of Mykolaiv City Council in response to an information request from NikVesti.

Following the Russian attack in 2022, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych stated that the school should be mothballed for the duration of the war.

«All surviving furniture and teaching materials have now been removed from the site. Specialists from the emergency services will now remove one wall, which is dilapidated and dangerous. We will mothball the school for the duration of the war,» the mayor wrote at the time.

Currently, the executive committee states that the issue of mothballing the building has not been officially considered over the years. One of the reasons cited is the security risk.

«Mykolaiv is under constant threat of missile, artillery and other types of shelling, which poses significant risks of damage or destruction to property regardless of any conservation measures,» they reported.

At the same time, the executive committee added that carrying out conservation work on the building requires «the mobilisation of substantial financial, material, technical and labour resources».

«Given limited funding and the priority allocation of available resources to meet immediate needs, carrying out such measures at present is economically unfeasible,» they noted.

At the same time, they recalled that specialists had carried out a technical survey of the building and emergency repair work. This was carried out by the company «Zhytloproombud-8» at a cost of 2.9 million hryvnias.

However, emergency repair and conservation work are not the same thing. Emergency repair work usually involves dismantling dangerous structures and reducing the risk of collapse. Conservation, on the other hand, is intended to provide long-term protection for the building against further deterioration — in particular from precipitation, moisture and environmental factors.

It is worth noting that four years after the Russian shelling, a reconstruction project for Lyceum №48 in Mykolaiv has still not been drawn up. Part of the documentation was funded by donors, but due to a lack of funds, work came to a halt at the initial stage. The city authorities hope to complete the project with the support of international partners.

It is worth noting that Mykolaiv Gymnasium №48 was once the largest school in the Korabelnyi district, attended by around a thousand children. However, in the summer of 2022, part of the school was destroyed by three missile strikes. The initial plan was to mothball it until the end of the war, but some of the damaged buildings were subsequently demolished.

It was later announced that the architectural concept for the restoration of School №48, destroyed by Russian shelling, would be developed by the Switanok Charitable Foundation.

The reconstruction of School №48 has also been included in Mykolaiv’s economic and social development programme for 2024–2026.
