Russian troops are trying to isolate the Korabel neighbourhood from the rest of Kherson. To do this, they are deliberately shelling the bridge over the Kosheva River, which connects the island part of the city with the mainland.
This was reported by Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, deputy head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, on the air of «Hromadske Radio».
According to him, the bridge remained passable as a result of the air strike on 2 August, but was damaged. It is through this bridge that all logistics to the neighbourhood pass.
«I would like to add that the Korabel neighbourhood, or Ostriv neighbourhood, was also completely flooded after the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station was blown up. And now the Russians are trying to cut it off from the mainland of Kherson by shelling the road bridge, which is where all the logistics are carried out. At the moment, the bridge is still passable, but it is damaged», said Tolokonnikov.
Experts are currently assessing the level of damage. The island is home to about 1,800 people, of whom 50 have been evacuated over the past 24 hours. Special attention is paid to people with limited mobility — there are 187 of them, and 18 of them were evacuated the day before.
«Slowly, people are starting to think and realise that the Russians will not stop shelling the bridges», added Tolokonnikov.
The strike also destroyed the gas network, leaving the neighbourhood without gas. Electricity is still available, but there are constant interruptions due to shelling.
«The island itself is suffering a lot. The people who stay there face a lack of utilities, food and possibly public transport. So it is better to evacuate. We have places to go — both within the city and the region and to other regions», said Tolokonnikov.
As a reminder, a bridge leading to the Korabel neighbourhood in Kherson was damaged by Russian air strikes. The regional authorities are asking residents to temporarily evacuate.
