The Institute of Mass Information (IMI)

The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) is an independent non-governmental organization that was founded in 1995 in Ukraine with the aim of protecting freedom of speech and supporting the development of independent media. IMI actively works in the field of media monitoring, protection of journalists' rights, as well as countering disinformation and propaganda.

IMI conducts the Freedom of Speech Barometer, which records cases of violations of freedom of speech and the rights of journalists in Ukraine. These data are used not only in Ukraine, but also by international organizations, such as the UN, EU, OSCE, to assess the state of democracy in the country. Monitoring also covers compliance with journalistic standards in leading Ukrainian media, including balance of opinions, credibility and separation of facts from comments.

IMI actively supports journalists through trainings, consultations and grant assistance. The organization helps newsrooms maintain their independence by providing financial and technical support, including equipment for safe work. In addition, IMI works to increase the transparency and responsibility of Ukrainian media by launching such initiatives as the Map of recommended media, which helps citizens find reliable sources of information.

Thanks to the support of IMI in the first days of the war, Mykolaiv journalists received protective equipment: body armor, helmets and first-aid kits. At the beginning of the war, our site was repeatedly subjected to DDoS attacks by digital criminals. It was IMI that engaged Google and their Shield project to protect the NikVesti site from such attacks. Representatives of the online media NikVesti also repeatedly participated in the Institute's events, received mini-grants, and attended consultations and seminars.
