Hennadiy Trukhanov began his political career in the early 2000s as a member of the Odesa City Council, where he headed the Party of Regions faction, and in 2012 he was elected a Member of Parliament of Ukraine from the same political force.


In May 2014, Trukhanov became the Mayor of Odesa, a position he held for several consecutive terms. During his tenure, the city implemented a number of infrastructure and social projects, though his leadership was also marked by multiple corruption scandals, most notably the case involving the purchase of the former “Kraian” factory building.


After the Revolution of Dignity, he distanced himself from the Party of Regions and founded a local political group called “Trust in Deeds,” which served as his electoral base in subsequent campaigns. Between 2023 and 2025, he became involved in several criminal cases, and in the autumn of 2025 his mayoral powers were terminated following a presidential decision to revoke his Ukrainian citizenship due to alleged possession of a Russian passport.
