President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that following the so-called «ceasefire» announced by the Kremlin, Russian troops are continuing assaults, shelling and drone attacks on Ukrainian positions.

According to the president, as of 7:00 am on 8 May, over 140 shelling incidents had already been recorded on the front line. During the night, Russian forces carried out 10 assaults, most of them in the Sloviansk direction.

In addition, Russia deployed over 850 drones of various types, including FPV drones, «Lancet» and strike drones. Reconnaissance drones also continued to operate in the skies above frontline communities.

«All this clearly demonstrates that there was not even a token attempt by the Russian side to cease fire on the front line,» said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The President added that Ukraine would respond in kind and continue to defend its positions and people.

The day before, on 7 May, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced a «ceasefire» from 8 to 10 May. At the same time, the Russian side threatened to strike the centre of Kyiv in the event of a breach.

It should be recalled that on 5 May, Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Russia’s massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine as «utter cynicism» against the backdrop of the Kremlin’s statements about «silence» ahead of 9 May.

It should be noted that last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin also announced a «ceasefire» from 8 to 11 May and called on Ukraine to «join in». This decision came in light of the Kremlin’s plans to hold a parade in Moscow on 9 May, to which a number of world leaders had been invited.

At the time, Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the proposal for a truce lasting just three days, stating that «no one will help Putin». He also emphasised that Ukraine would not provide any security guarantees.
