This will help ensure stable power supply to critical infrastructure, the executive committee of the city council said. However, they did not specify how long the city will be without street lighting.

«Pursuant to the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and as part of the energy saving plan, street and other outdoor lighting will be temporarily switched off in the city», the statement said.

What about street lighting in Mykolaiv?

At one of the last sessions of the city council, Tetiana Dombrovska, a deputy from the «Servant of the People» party, asked whether it was possible to extend evening lighting in Mykolaiv by an hour after 23:00. The mayor promised to look into the matter.

The city council's Department of Housing and Communal Services said that an additional hour of lighting would cost the Mykolaiv city council budget 10 million hryvnias a year.

Back in 2024, to save electricity, Mykolaiv planned to stop lighting the surrounding areas and executive buildings, as well as reduce lighting on the streets and in parks.

Subsequently, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych shared plans to completely replace the city's lighting with LED technology to reduce electricity consumption.

For example, in 2023, 9,000 outdoor sodium lamps were replaced with LED lighting in Mykolaiv.
