This year, a count of stray animals was conducted in Mykolaiv. According to its results, there are 5,500 dogs living on the streets in the city.
This was reported by the «Animal Protection Centre» in response to a request from NikVesti.
It is indicated that the animals were counted for three days, from 30 April to 2 May. The count was carried out using the Animal ID methodology with the participation of volunteers, employees of the enterprise and concerned citizens.
The company notes that earlier counts in Ukraine were carried out by international organisations «Four Paws» and Animal ID, but after the outbreak of a full-scale war, their activities were suspended. Now Mykolaiv has resumed this practice on its own.
In the future, the «Animal Protection Centre» plans to conduct a count every year to better monitor the situation.
The last count of stray animals was conducted in 2018. Its results showed that there were 4,500 animals on the street then. But the number of dogs has definitely increased in recent years, according to the company's experts.
As a reminder, Mykolaiv regularly hosts stray animal adoption exhibitions. They are organised by both volunteers and the municipal enterprise «and the Animal Protection Centre». For example, at the exhibition in June, 7 dogs and 3 cats found new homes.
We also remind you that in January, the city extended the validity period and approved amendments to the Programme for the Treatment of Cats and Dogs and the Regulation of the Number of Stray Animals by Humane Methods.
A total of 1, 500 stray cats and dogs were planned to be sterilised in Mykolaiv in 2025 as part of the programme for humane regulation of their number.
In addition, 59.8 million hryvnias is needed to reconstruct the infrastructure of the utility company. The Mykolaiv City Council is looking for a donor to finance these works. So far, 1 million hryvnias has been spent on repairing the Centre's animal enclosures.
It is worth noting that the staff of the Mykolaiv «Animal Protection Centre» were among those who rescued animals in the disaster area after the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station explosion. They managed to save more than 100 dogs and 30 cats.
