The former mayor of Kherson, Volodymyr Mykolaienko, has been awarded the title of «Honorary Citizen of the Kherson City Territorial Community».

The relevant order was signed by the head of the Kherson CMA Roman Shanko.

The document states that the title was awarded to «for many years of work for the benefit of the community, patriotism, courage, unwavering stance during Russian aggression, firmness of convictions and support for the territorial defence of Kherson».

Abduction of former mayor Volodymyr Mykolaienko

Volodymyr Mykolaienko was abducted on 18 April 2022. In July, it became known that he refused to cooperate with collaborator Kyrylo Stremousov.

It should be noted that Volodymyr Mykolayenko was the mayor of Kherson from 2014 to 2020. At that time, he opposed the forces that have «pro-Russian roots». And his assistant in this was a well-known Kherson activist Kateryna Handziuk, who worked as an advisor to the mayor.

On 3 May, he was featured in a propaganda story on a Russian TV channel. The Russian journalist tried to force Mykolayenko to recognise UPA commander-in-chief Roman Shukhevych as a Nazi.

Later, on 24 August, during a 146-for-146 prisoner exchange, Ukraine returned former Kherson mayor Volodymyr Mykolaienko from Russian captivity. He could have been exchanged earlier. However, in May it became known that he refused to be exchanged in favour of another seriously ill prisoner.

The politician recently spoke about his time in captivity.
