The population of Mykolaiv has decreased by more than 75,000 people in three years. While in February 2022, about 469,000 people lived in the city, as of the beginning of 2025, only 394,300 people were recorded in the community register. Thus, in three years, the city has lost more than 75,000 people.
This is evidenced by the data of the Department of Economic Development of the City Council in the forecast of the community budget for 2026-2028, according to NikVesti.
At the same time, the number of officially registered unemployed in the city is projected at 804 people in 2026, and 756 in 2028.
Mykolaiv also remains a city that hosts internally displaced persons. While at the beginning of 2025 there were 63.6 thousand of them, in 2028 the number is expected to exceed 73 thousand.

Despite the demographic decline, the labour market is showing improvement. According to the regional employment centre, the number of unemployed in Mykolaiv district decreased by 34.5% — from 8,751 people in early 2024 to 5,729 in early 2025. As part of the government programme «eRobota», 10 residents have even started their own businesses.
Along with this, the level of income will also increase. The average salary in the city is projected to rise from 18,000 hryvnias in 2024 to 25,000 hryvnias in 2028.
As a reminder, the Mykolaiv City Council explained how they support business during the war: they interview entrepreneurs through Google forms, collect problematic issues and help them join grant programmes.
