Grain yields are up, milk production is down: what’s happening in the agricultural sector of the Mykolaiv region

In the Mykolaiv region, 2.5 million tonnes of cereals and pulses had been harvested by the start of August this year. This is 32 per cent more than during the same period last year.

This is according to data from the regional statistics office, as reported by NikVesti.

On average, farmers harvested 40.4 centner of grain per hectare. Yields have increased by more than 29% over the year.

There was also an increase in rapeseed and spring rapeseed. A total of 347,800 tonnes were harvested — 32.4 per cent more than last year. Yields rose by 23 per cent to 24.1 centners per hectare.

A total of 45,000 tonnes of vegetables were harvested — 7.2 per cent more than last year. However, the potato harvest was slightly lower — 43,300 tonnes, which is 2.4 per cent below last year’s figure.

Overall, agricultural production in the region rose by 27.2 per cent between January and July. The greatest growth was seen in crop production, which increased by 31.3 per cent.

In livestock farming, figures fell. Over the seven-month period, production fell by 7.4 per cent. Milk production totalled 108.7 thousand tonnes — 6.3% less than last year. The volume of livestock sold for slaughter, in live weight, amounted to 11.9 thousand tonnes — 3.3% less than last year.

At the same time, egg production rose by 2.8 per cent. Over the seven-month period, 88.8 million eggs were produced in the region.

Enterprises sold cereals at an average price of 8,700 hryvnias per tonne, oilseeds at 24,300 hryvnias, potatoes at 10,300 hryvnias, and vegetables at 6,700 hryvnias per tonne.

It is worth noting that the Mykolaiv region accounts for around 3–4 per cent of Ukraine’s total grain production and around 7 per cent of sunflower production.
