In Mykolaiv, a plant for recycling construction waste from damaged buildings will accept waste from other communities and directly from Mykolaiv residents.

The procedure for the functioning of the site for temporary storage of demolition waste was approved at a meeting of the executive committee on Wednesday, 13 August, according to NikVesti.

The director of the Department of Housing and Communal Services, Dmytro Bezdolnyi, noted that the site accepts demolition waste, including concrete, bricks, metal, wood, glass and other materials.

Residents of Mykolaiv have the right to bring demolition waste on their own. Dmytro Bezdolnyi also noted that the site will also accept waste from other communities, and the recycling tariffs will be approved later.

According to the draft decision, other territorial communities will be able to receive 75% of the finished product, provided that 20% is used for the needs of the Mykolaiv city territorial community, and 5% of the total volume is dust.

The waste will be sorted at the site and then classified into six categories using crushers and screening machines. The operator, Municipal Enterprise «ELU Avtodorig», must submit a report to the Department of Housing and Communal Services every three months on the amount of demolition waste, what was done with it, and how much remains.

In two months of operation, the plant for recycling construction waste from damaged buildings in Mykolaiv has processed 3,692 tonnes of debris.

A new recycling plant for demolition waste was launched in Mykolaiv in the summer of 2025. In particular, the plant will be used for the needs of two other regions: Kherson region and part of Kirovohrad region.

The city authorities are also going to launch the production of construction materials that will be processed from demolition waste and used to repair the city's infrastructure.

Demolition waste in the Mykolaiv region

As of the end of 2023, Mykolaiv region is among the six regions most contaminated with demolition waste: it covers an area of more than half a million square metres. Currently, some of this waste is stored at landfills, while others are still at the sites of destruction. This is harmful to the environment of the region: the destruction waste pollutes water, soil, and air. This raises the issue of their professional disposal and recycling to rebuild the region, as described in the article NikVesti «Raising from the ruins: How is Mykolaiv region going to get rid of destruction waste?»

As of the end of November 2023, 57 hectares of the territory of Mykolaiv region were littered with construction waste caused by shelling. At the same time, the Department of Housing and Communal Services of Mykolaiv reported that by the end of 2023, the city should receive a special unit for shredding demolition waste.

In 2023, five temporary storage sites for demolition waste were identified in Mykolaiv region.

Plans to build a plant in Mykolaiv region to recycle construction waste generated by enemy shelling were announced two years ago, in the summer of 2023. The plant was supposed to process construction waste from two regions: Mykolaiv and Kherson. This was stated by the head of the Shevchenkove community, Oleh Pylypenko. And the Shevchenkove community wants to deal with the disposal of hazardous demolition waste containing asbestos.

In particular, it was reported that the Japanese international cooperation agency JICA plans to build a solid waste recycling plant in Mykolaiv, having donated construction waste processing equipment worth about €5 million to the city. The project to build a construction waste recycling plant in Mykolaiv was expected to start in early 2025, with staff training to begin in autumn.

As of 1 July 2024, almost 6,000 tonnes of construction waste was generated in Mykolaiv region due to Russian shelling.
