Roman Kostenko, a member of parliament who took part in the defence of Mykolaiv, believes that the southern regions and the Black Sea remain a strategic factor that gives Ukraine a chance to fully liberate its territories.
The secretary of the parliamentary committee on national security, defence and intelligence said this during the second international security forum Black Sea Security Forum in Odesa. He was quoted by Ukrinform.
«If we lose some region, or more territory in the Donetsk region, or maybe in the North, but having the South and the sea, we remain a maritime power. We will have the resources to get everything back. If we lost Mykolaiv, Kherson, and even more so Odesa, we would have much less chance», said Kostenko.
According to the MP, the battle for the south is one of the key ones in this war, and it is the one that allowed Ukrainians to hold the line, plan the offensive and maintain their strategic advantage.
«We all know that war is primarily about the economy. These are the resources and opportunities that the economy gives us. And 60% of our exports went through the sea.» Even during the full-scale invasion, the figures were significant — exports that brought in billions of dollars in revenue, which we used to replenish the Security and Defence Forces to keep us on the front line,» said Roman Kostenko.
Earlier, Ukrainian MP Roman Kostenko, who took part in the defence of Mykolaiv, expressed the opinion that the Russians had not abandoned their plans to seize Mykolaiv and Odesa regions. The enemy will definitely try to invade these territories.
