Illustrative photo: Getty ImagesFollowing an attack on the Mykolaiv remand centre in the early hours of 10 September, around 170 people were evacuated from the building. They were distributed amongst correctional facilities in Kropyvnytskyi, Odesa and the Mykolaiv region.
Vasyl Donets, a representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, reported this in a comment to NikVesti.
According to him, there was no direct hit on the detention centre’s cells, but the attack caused significant damage to the building’s roof and caused plaster to crumble.
He noted that the situation is currently fully under control. People who were on the third floor have been evacuated.
«We are talking about 170 people. We have not received any complaints regarding this matter to date. We are monitoring the situation,» said the Ombudsman’s representative.
The Ombudsman has no information regarding any fatalities or injuries resulting from the attack.
According to him, people may have experienced an acute stress reaction following the shelling, but no reports to medical facilities regarding this have been recorded.
«It is possible that some people may have experienced an acute stress reaction, but no one has sought medical attention,» added Vasyl Donets.
The Mykolaiv Regional State Administration reported the strike on the building on the morning of 10 September. Later, during a session of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, Vasyl Donets confirmed the report and stated that the issue of evacuating the people inside was being addressed.
