During a meeting of the EU Council on Justice and Home Affairs to be held on 12-13 June in Luxembourg, the European Union plans to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2027.

This was announced by Ukraine's Ambassador to the EU Vsevolod Chentsov, reports European Truth.

The ambassador stressed that this decision is made in view of the security situation in Ukraine, which, unfortunately, is not improving. According to him, almost half of the Ukrainians under temporary protection in the EU are women, and about a third are children.

Vsevolod Chentsov also said that next week, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Chernyshov will visit Brussels to discuss with European officials the future of temporary protection and the possible return of Ukrainians when the situation allows.

Following consultations with Kyiv, the European Commission is to outline its vision of how to end the directive after March 2027.

Earlier, Oleksii Chernyshov said that in case the war ends or is brought to an end, 30% of Ukrainian refugees will be seriously considered for return to Ukraine, and another 40% may return later.

In total, as of January 2025, 21% of Ukrainians are ready to leave the country in the event of full border opening. The main reasons for this decision are the lack of development opportunities, the consequences of the war, and insufficient social support.
