US senators submit resolution to return Ukrainian children from Russia

On Tuesday, 20 May, a group of US senators introduced a bipartisan resolution calling for the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia before any peace agreement to end the war is concluded.

This was reported by Ostap Yarysh, a former journalist for «Voice of America».

The resolution was initiated by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Democrat Amy Klobuchar. They were joined by other lawmakers from both parties, as well as NGOs. The document states that Russia has taken approximately 20,000 children from Ukraine.

Senator Grassley called the Kremlin's actions an attempt to destroy the Ukrainian identity through the Russification of children: «The US should demand the return of these children before any agreement with Russia is signed».

As journalist Ostap Yarysh notes, this is the first Senate initiative on negotiations with Russia supported by Republicans since Donald Trump returned to power. The resolution is also a continuation of the appeal of 40 religious leaders to the US President and the Secretary of State with the same call.

Earlier it was reported that more than 1300 children had been returned to Ukraine. It was also noted that the return of all deported children remains a priority for Ukraine and is one of the key conditions for a future peace agreement with Russia. The case of the deportation of Ukrainian children is also being investigated by the International Criminal Court.
