The contractor has completed 67% of the reconstruction of a gymnasium in the centre of Mykolaiv

As of the end of March 2025, the contractor had already completed 67% of the work on the restoration of the historic building of the Mykolaiv gymnasium (lyceum).

The contracting company «Zhyloprombud-8» says that «all work is being carried out in parallel». In total, about fifty specialists are currently working on the site, all of whom work up to 10 hours a day.

«Before the work started, everything was extremely sad here, because the building is over 100 years old. Yes, some work had been done there, but everything has to be done all over again. There is no part of the building where we are not currently working,» says Roman, a representative of the contractor.

Dismantling work has already been completed there, according to the RMA: dismantling of coatings, doors, windows, utilities, metal gates, dismantling of the basement entrance, extension, foundation, stairs, porch, walls and partitions, floors, ceilings, structures of the first and second floors, and the roof.

The contractor also carried out excavation works, made foundations for the lift equipment, partially restored the façade, arranged the roof, installed window units, partially completed general construction and interior finishing works, and laid engineering networks: water supply, sewerage, ventilation, heating, and fire alarm.

Work on the façade of the historic building is underway, which involves several stages: mechanical cleaning of the coating, water and air cleaning, application of various types of primer, stone replacement, pothole repair, special paint coating, and reconstruction of architectural details.

Restoration of gymnasium №2

The issue of restoring the building of Gymnasium №2 was raised even before the full-scale invasion. In March 2021, the premises of the gymnasium were declared an emergency. A petition was created on the city council's website to keep the gymnasium in a viable condition, which was supported by more than a thousand citizens. Two days later, the head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Vitalii Kim, said that the regional authorities were ready to cooperate with the city authorities on the restoration of Gymnasium №2.

In May 2021, Oleksandr Pozdniakov, head of the capital construction department of the Mykolaiv City Council, said that two companies had responded to a commercial offer to investigate the gymnasium's emergency status. It turned out that only part of the roof was unsafe, and there was no threat to the educational process. At that time, the wing of the gymnasium was used to house the library and museum.

Later, the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, said that the gymnasium №2 would undergo routine repairs by the end of 2021, while major repairs would be postponed for now.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the gymnasium has survived four enemy attacks. The first one took place in April 2022. The building was damaged by cluster munitions.

Therefore, the restoration of the institution was among the four facilities in Mykolaiv region for which the government allocated 1.2 billion hryvnias in 2024. Of these funds, 149.5 million hryvnias was allocated from the state budget for the reconstruction of gymnasium №2.

In July 2023, the Department of Urban Development and Architecture of Mykolaiv Regional State Administration ordered a project and subsequently a tender for the restoration of the building, which was won by «Zhytloprombud-8» with a bid of 145.5 million hryvnias. The contractor was supposed to complete the work by 31 December 2024, including the construction of a shelter and the restoration of the building after the shelling. However, it failed to complete these works and they were postponed to 2025.
