The United States has said that Ukraine can use their weapons to strike Russian forces that are shelling Ukrainian troops at any point along the border with the Russian Federation, not just on Russian territory near the Kharkiv region.

This was stated by Pentagon spokesman Patrick S. Ryder, Reuters reports.

«The ability to return fire in the event of fire is what this policy is all about...as we see Russian forces firing across the border, Ukraine can return fire at these ground forces using US-supplied munitions.» said Patrick Ryder.

He added that this is self-defense, so it is «quite logical» that Ukraine can use American weapons to defeat Russian troops on the other side of the border.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that American weapons should not be used by Ukraine to strike more than 320 kilometers deep into Russia. Kyiv cannot use it to hit Moscow or the Kremlin.

Officials later clarified that Biden's decision only applied to targets inside Russia near the border with Ukraine's eastern Kharkiv region.

At the same time, the American leader did not answer the journalist's question whether American-made weapons had already been used in Russia after he gave permission for it.
