Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that an immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, as called for by European leaders, would mean, in his words, «the preservation of the Nazi regime» and «a ban on the Russian language».
According to «RIA Novosti», this is how Sergey Lavrov commented on the joint statement of European leaders who expressed support for Ukraine and US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the fighting.
«A ceasefire now would mean only one thing — that most of Ukraine remains under the rule of the Nazi regime. This will be the only place on earth where an entire language is legally banned, not to mention that it is the official language of the UN and the language spoken by the majority of the population», said Sergei Lavrov after talks with the Ethiopian Foreign Minister.
He also said that «Zelenskyy's European patrons» are allegedly persuading the US not to seek a long-term settlement, but «to simply stop and then let history judge».
According to Sergei Lavrov, this approach contradicts the positions that he claims were agreed upon by Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Anchorage.
Recently, Kremlin spokesman Dmitrii Peskov said that Moscow's position on US President Donald Trump's proposal to freeze the front line for the start of negotiations has not changed.
