NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that he will not interfere in discussions on the possible supply of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.
He said this during a press conference after a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, Sky News reports.
Mark Rutte welcomed the planned meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, which is to take place on 17 October in Washington.
Answering a question about his support for the US initiative to provide Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, the Secretary General said: «I will not interfere in this, it is up to individual allies».
He added that the Alliance's main goal is to bring the war to an end through diplomatic means.
«Ultimately, we need to get Putin to the table, to start meaningful negotiations and to bring this terrible war to an end,» Mark Rutte said.
As a reminder, Donald Trump recently said that the decision to provide Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine had been made to some extent», but stressed that he was not seeking escalation with Russia.
He noted that he is ready to give Ukraine Tomahawk cruise missiles if the war with Russia is not resolved. According to him, such a statement is an element of pressure on the Kremlin, and he plans to discuss this issue personally with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that Ukraine's use of Tomahawk missiles «would damage relations between Moscow and Washington». Later, the Kremlin stated that it was waiting for concrete decisions from the United States on the possible supply of cruise missiles to Ukraine.
