This week, the administration of US President Donald Trump will consider imposing new sanctions against Russia.
This was stated by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an interview with Fox News.
According to him, the decision is due to the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite recent peace talks, has continued and even intensified the bombing of Ukraine.
«Putin, after the historic meeting in Anchorage and a phone call when European leaders and President Zelenskyy were in the White House, did the opposite of what he said he would do. He shamefully intensified the strikes. So all options remain on the table, and we will look at them very carefully this week,» Scott Bessent said.
The day before, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reminded that two weeks had passed since Donald Trump gave Russia 14 days to confirm its readiness for talks at the level of leaders.
Prior to that, the White House said that Donald Trump did not want to impose new sanctions on Russia, but was ready to do so if necessary.
At the same time, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal stressed the need for an early vote on the bill on new sanctions against Russia. In his opinion, Russian President Vladimir Putin «does not deserve additional time».
It should be noted that almost 60% of Americans are not confident in Donald Trump's ability to make informed decisions regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine.
