The peace initiatives that Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed with US President Donald Trump during their meeting in Alaska contain a number of demands on Ukraine, including the transfer of some territories and official recognition of the Russian language.

Reuters reports this with reference to sources familiar with the negotiations.

According to the agency, the key points of the proposals are as follows:

  • The withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donetsk and Luhansk regions in exchange for Moscow's commitment to freeze the front line in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
  • Formal recognition of Crimea as Russian territory — at least by part of the international community.
  • Return of small territories in Sumy and Kharkiv regions that are temporarily occupied.
  • Cancellation of some sanctions against Russia.
  • Prohibiting Ukraine's accession to NATO, although at the same time, Vladimir Putin allows Kyiv to receive certain security guarantees.
  • Granting the Russian language official status in certain regions or throughout the country.
  • Free operation of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

At the same time, according to Reuters, Russia insists that a ceasefire is possible only after a peace agreement is signed.

How Donald Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin went

On Friday evening, 15 August, US President Donald Trump met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.

During the meeting, the US and Russian presidents did not reach an agreement on a truce in Ukraine, but, according to Donald Trump, progress can be made in this direction. It is possible that the next summit could take place soon and President Zelenskyy could join it.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is planning to visit Washington to discuss with US President Donald Trump the details of ending the war and further steps to ensure Ukraine's security.
