After his talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump proposed a trilateral summit with Ukraine and European leaders.

In a telephone conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and EU representatives, he stressed that he wants to organise the meeting «quickly» — as early as 22 August, Axios reports, citing sources.

At the same time, Putin has not publicly confirmed his readiness to participate in such a meeting.

According to Reuters, in a conversation with Trump, the Russian president expressed his readiness to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, but he wants to see China among the guarantors. In addition, Putin put forward a number of conditions: the return of Russian as the official language in Ukraine and security guarantees for Russian Orthodox churches.

Bloomberg notes that if his demands are met, the Kremlin is ready to sign a written promise not to attack Ukraine or European states again.

In turn, Zelenskyy refused to comply with the Kremlin's demand to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Donbas.

Trump and Putin meet in Alaska

On 15 August, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska. The talks lasted more than two hours. The US and Russian presidents did not reach an agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine, but, according to Donald Trump, progress can be made in this direction. It is possible that another summit could be held soon and President Zelenskyy could join it.

After the meeting, European leaders and top EU officials issued a joint statement. They declared their readiness for a trilateral summit with the US, Europe and Ukraine, and said that Washington was ready to provide Kyiv with security guarantees.

On Monday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to visit Washington to discuss with US President Donald Trump the details of ending the war and further steps to ensure Ukraine's security.
