Former chairman of the German Social Democratic Party's Bundestag faction, Rolf Mützenich, said that the verbal spat between US President Donald Trump and Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitrii Medvedev is an irresponsible game of fire.

He was commenting on the situation when, following Dmitry Medvedev's statements, Donald Trump ordered nuclear submarines «to be sent to the relevant regions», Spiegel reports.

According to Rolf Mützenich, such rhetoric is «not only tactless and rash, but also irresponsible». He recalled the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, called for not playing with the nuclear issue and expects a clear response from the German government.

«When the current president, who is also a partner in a military alliance, speaks so boldly and foolishly, silence is unacceptable,» he said.

Rolf Mützenich also warned that Donald Trump's brusque style, which has worked in tariff and military disputes, could be dangerous in the security sphere: «We will be on a fatal path».

He added that the war unleashed by Vladimir Putin has repeatedly brought the world to the brink of nuclear escalation. «The exchange of blows» between Donald Trump and Dmitry Medvedev, he said, is another indication that the war could escalate at any time.

Earlier, Donald Trump said that the US nuclear submarines that he ordered to be redeployed because of Dmitry Medvedev's threats were already closer to Russia.
