EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius has said that the European Union can significantly increase its support for Ukraine by purchasing weapons directly from domestic manufacturers.
He wrote about this on the social network X.
«If Trump does not convince Putin to make peace, we could make a more convincing case for peace very quickly — by significantly increasing our military support for Ukraine», he said.
According to him, the US and EU annually allocate about 40 billion euros for military aid to Ukraine, but these funds could be used more efficiently. If they were invested in the purchase of Ukrainian weapons, the amount of military support could actually be doubled, as Ukrainian weapons are about half the price of similar ones from the EU or the US.
Andrius Kubilius also stressed that the EU has the opportunity to increase its assistance to Ukraine through a new mechanism — security loans. They allow member states to finance military procurement for Ukraine, which contributes to the implementation of the «peace through strength» strategy.
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called on European countries to join «the Danish model of» support, which provides for the financing of military assistance through trust funds, with a focus on purchasing weapons directly from Ukraine. The initiative has already been supported by the Netherlands, Norway and the Czech Republic, and the EU considers this model to be the basis of a long-term strategy to help Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that the European Union is preparing a contingency plan to maintain sanctions against Russia if the Donald Trump administration decides to stop participating in negotiations on Ukraine.
