Russia will pose a threat to NATO member states for many years to come, even after a possible peace agreement with Ukraine.

This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte before a meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of foreign ministers in Brussels, according to «Evropeiska pravda».

He stressed that NATO has a long-term strategy to protect its territory from Russia. According to him, the threat from Moscow will not disappear even after the end of the war in Ukraine, so the Alliance must plan defence measures for 2032 and beyond.

He also reiterated that the United States remains a reliable ally of NATO, recalling Donald Trump's statement of commitment to Article 5 of the Alliance's Treaty.

Rutte also emphasised the US expectation that European countries and Canada will increase defence spending. He noted that this is necessary because of the threat from Russia, China's nuclear arms buildup, and the actions of Iran and North Korea.

Earlier it was reported that the United States is considering the option of automatically granting Ukraine NATO membership if Russia violates the peace agreement.
