Today, 26 January, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Ukraine was opened in Mykolaiv, which will work on community recovery and provide assistance to residents of the region.
This was reported by a correspondent for NikVesti.
The opening of the office was made possible within the framework of a three-year Strategic Partnership for Mykolaiv, concluded between the Government of Denmark, UNDP, and regional and city administrations. The programme has a budget of over $36 million and aims to accelerate the reconstruction of the Mykolaiv region, restore critical infrastructure, support the local economy, strengthen institutions and increase community resilience.
UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Auke Lotma noted that the opening of the office in Mykolaiv is a long-term investment that should strengthen the organisation's ability to support communities in the Mykolaiv region on their path to recovery, reconstruction and sustainable development.
«In Ukraine, we sincerely hope that this initiative will be successful and productive in terms of supporting the processes you are implementing. It is difficult to remember when I last had the opportunity to be here, as we are constantly working intensively. Therefore, I will not stay long, but I would like to express my sincere gratitude. I would also like to note that you certainly understand that this is not a one-year initiative. It is a long-term investment. I am convinced that cooperation and partnership with all of you will enable us to fulfil this commitment. We are really looking forward to working with those who work here every day to make people's lives better,» said Auke Lotmsa.
Jakob Hansen, Head of the Danish Embassy Office in Mykolaiv, said that over the next three years, projects will be implemented in the region in the areas of healthcare, support for veterans, development of administrative services and education.
«Today, we have officially opened a new UNDP office in Mykolaiv. Over the next three years, projects will be implemented here in many areas: renovation and modernisation of hospitals, provision of services to veterans, and the opening and development of administrative service centres throughout the Mykolaiv region. This is an important event, because now we will have colleagues from UNDP working in the city, with whom we will be able to cooperate on a daily basis,» says Jacob Hansen.

There are also plans to focus on supporting veterans and developing education, in particular by supporting educational institutions that train specialists in technical fields that are currently in high demand in the region, such as mechanics, welders and other blue-collar professions.
Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych added that previously the nearest UNDP office was in Odesa, and now its opening in Mykolaiv will significantly improve the organisation's cooperation and presence in the region. According to him, this will facilitate the implementation of projects and make community support more accessible and effective.
«I believe that today's opening is a logical step that we have all been waiting for. It is quite logical that the office is located in Mykolaiv, a city that actively supports the development of the region and is also home to the Danish Embassy, which shares the UNDP's vision and is largely funded by the Danish government. It is a great honour and responsibility for us to have you here. This means that cooperation in the future will become easier, more accessible and more effective. Previously, we felt like the «younger brothers» of Odesa, as that was where the nearest office was located, but now the opportunities for work in the region have expanded significantly, which is important for the implementation of joint initiatives,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.
Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, also emphasised the importance of this step for the development of the region. According to him, the presence of the office will increase the efficiency of work, strengthen communication and facilitate the implementation of joint projects.
«I am convinced that in order to work even more efficiently, it was necessary to open an office here. I believe that you have succeeded, and I am very glad that this has already become a reality. The opening of the office will significantly improve our communication, and this came as no surprise to us. Now you have a team and volunteers, and I am convinced that this will help you do your joint work even better. A lot of work awaits us next year. It is important to establish communication, support each other and show European citizens how we work. This is extremely important for our region, as we have ambitious plans for economic development and recovery, taking into account future challenges,» concluded Vitalii Kim.
