There are over 1,770 shelters in the Mykolaiv region: 125 new ones were opened during the year

As of early 2026, there are 1,774 shelters in the Mykolaiv region. Over the past year, their number has increased by 125 new protective structures.

This was reported by Olena Horbachova, head of the civil protection department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration's civil protection department, during a briefing on 25 February, according to NikVesti.

According to her, there are 256 shelters, 704 anti-radiation shelters, 783 simple shelters and 31 mobile shelters located in crowded places, such as bus stops, in the region.

«As of today, a fund of protective structures has been created in the region, which includes 1,774 objects. Of these, 256 are shelters, 704 are anti-radiation shelters, 783 are simple shelters, and 31 are primary mobile shelters equipped in crowded places, such as public transport stops. In total, by the beginning of 2026, the shelter fund had increased by 125 shelters within the scope of development. This work is ongoing, it is multi-stage and requires significant resources. At the same time, the increase of the fund by 125 shelters is quite a good indicator,» said Olena Horbachova.

It should be noted that in 2025, 394 billion hryvnias were allocated for the development of education in Ukraine, part of which was used for the security and modernisation of educational institutions in frontline regions, including Mykolaiv Oblast.

In particular, the state allocated 4.3 billion hryvnias for the construction of shelters in schools in frontline regions. Of these, 10 facilities were implemented in the Mykolaiv region. In total, such work was carried out in 87 educational institutions in various regions of the country.

According to First Deputy Minister of Finance Roman Yermolichev, significant resources were also allocated during the year to support teachers, develop inclusive education, and upgrade school infrastructure. The state financed free meals for primary school pupils and continued the programme to modernise the material and technical base of educational institutions — from the purchase of textbooks and school buses to the creation of modern training and practical centres for vocational education.

Key education expenditures in 2025 include:

• ₴101.3 billion — salaries for over 461,000 teachers;
• ₴10.6 billion — additional payments to teachers for special working conditions;
• ₴5.4 billion — free meals for 1.5 million students;
• ₴1.9 billion — purchase of 797 school buses;
• ₴1.3 billion — printing and purchasing textbooks;
• ₴0.8 billion — modernisation of school canteens in 157 educational institutions.
