In Mykolaiv, management companies that do not clear sidewalks of ice will be fined

Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said that management companies that do not sprinkle sidewalks in the courtyards of apartment buildings during icy conditions will be fined.

He announced this on 2 February during a staff meeting at the Mykolaiv City Council, according to NikVesti.

According to the mayor, the city authorities have received numerous complaints from residents about slippery pavements in courtyards and near residential buildings, which are the responsibility of management companies.

«Colleagues, I ask the Department of Housing and Communal Services and the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks to continue working on repairing the pavements. The Department of Housing and Communal Services, together with the district administrations, also needs to address the issue of management companies that are not coping with this work and move on to fining them. People do not understand who is responsible for what, particularly with regard to courtyard areas, for which management companies are responsible,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.

The mayor stressed that if residents report inaction on the part of management companies, district administrations must respond promptly and impose penalties.

«Therefore, please, district administrations: if there are complaints from residents, you need to work through this situation and impose fines. If they do not want to work in good faith, we will act differently. We are ready to help, but if someone just decides to wait it out, we will impose fines,» added the mayor.

In turn, Mykolaiv Deputy Mayor Vitaliy Lukov said that district administrations have already begun inspections and have drawn up reports on violators.

«The administrations have drawn up reports; they worked on this situation over the weekend. Most of the violations concern management companies. There are certain issues regarding access to the personal data of managers, but this issue has been worked out in accordance with the instructions. On Friday, all management companies were sent telephone messages, and on Saturday, their response was already being checked. Therefore, we will not limit ourselves to warnings,» said Vitalii Lukov.

As a reminder, over the weekend, approximately 408 tonnes of salt were spread on the roads of Mykolaiv. Nine combination machines and three tractors were used to clear the roads.

Earlier, Oleksandr Sienkevych called on the heads of condominiums, management companies and businesses to quickly clear and sprinkle the paths near the adjacent territories.

In particular, eight combined road machines and one loader from the ELU Avtodorig municipal enterprise are on duty on the streets of Mykolaiv. The situation on the roads is monitored by the dispatcher on duty.

In total, municipal services in Mykolaiv used 207 tonnes of anti-icing mixture and cleared contact networks for electric transport to operate.

Black ice in Mykolaiv

Last week, there was ice on the roads in Mykolaiv. Weather forecasters predicted that the bad weather would continue. In particular, on 28 January, there was light rain with wet snow, and during the day, there was ice and heavy fog.

On 26 January, 13 people were admitted to hospital with injuries caused by icy conditions. As of 27 January, this number had risen to 60.

Employees of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks reported that they were working in an enhanced mode due to the icy conditions. They used 22,700 kilograms of anti-icing mixture to treat sidewalks and pedestrian areas.

Subsequently, the first deputy mayor of Mykolaiv, Vitalii Lukov, stated that there were not enough municipal workers to combat the icy conditions in Mykolaiv. Currently, municipal workers are sprinkling salt and sand on the city streets, but only near public transport stops and in areas with large crowds of people. The city authorities are also calling on local businesses to sprinkle salt and sand on the areas adjacent to their premises.

Vitalii Lukov also urged Mykolaiv residents to wait out the bad weather at home if possible.

Later it became known that 98 people had been admitted to hospital over the last three days due to icy conditions, most of whom had fallen on slippery pavements.
