SSU exposes Hungarian intelligence agents who collected data on Ukraine's defence

The SSU uncovered an intelligence network engaged in espionage in Zakarpattia region. Two suspects were detained for passing information about military forces, weapons and the reaction of local residents to the possible arrival of Hungarian troops to Hungarian special services.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.

It is noted that one of the agents was a former military officer who was recruited in 2021. He was activated in September 2024, and was tasked with collecting data on defensive positions, military equipment, and possible ways to bypass Ukrainian defences. According to the SBU, after collecting the information, he travelled to Hungary, using false documents to report to his supervisor.

«According to the case file, during the meeting, the Hungarian intelligence officer handed over cash to the agent, which was to be used for the tasks assigned. The traitor was also looking for a network of informants. The SSU found that the resident tried to recruit at least two people», the statement said.

In March, the SSU documented the agent's second meeting with a Hungarian curator. He received a special phone for covert communication. It is stated that his new tasks include collecting information about the official vehicles of the defence forces in Zakarpattia, data on the losses of Ukrainian soldiers and the situation at the front. He has already found a contact in the Armed Forces to transfer this data.

It is also noted that the second agent was a former servicewoman who passed on information about military aircraft and defence systems to the Hungarians.

The SSU documented the agents' actions and detained them at their residences. Equipment and other evidence of espionage activities were seized from them.

They have been notified of being suspected of high treason. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As a reminder, a 57-year-old woman who worked in one of the departments of the Pervomaisk City Council was detained in Mykolaiv region. She is suspected of passing information about the Ukrainian military to the Russians.
